The Best Apple Pie for Dieters

Apple Pie, Baking, Apple, Pie, Dessert
Dieters shouldn't have to give up every one of their favorite foods. It's reasonable to enjoy special treats now and then - especially at special events, like Thanksgiving dinner. One of my favorites is apple pie.  But I'm careful about what I eat and I only eat the best apple pie for dieters.

Calories in Apple Pie

The calories in apple pie can vary significantly.  As you might imagine, pre-packaged pies tend to be higher in fat and calories. According to CalorieCount.com, there are 296 calories in a slice of apple pie when it is commercially prepared.  The treat also provides nearly 14 grams of fat and 20 grams of sugar.
If you eat apple pie in a restaurant, you could easily consume even more fat and calories because a restaurant is more likely to serve a portion that is too big.  A single serving of commercially-prepared apple pie is only 1/10th  to 1/8th of a 9-inch diameter pie.  That’s very small.  Many restaurants will provide a generous helping of pie along with high fat and high calorie side dishes like whipped cream or ice cream. For example, if you visit Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery your order of apple pie will contain 630 calories and 39 grams of fat, without any toppings at all.

Best Apple Pie for Dieters

If you love apple pie, why not make it at home?  That way you still get to enjoy the taste of your favorite treat but you can control the amount of sugar and fat that is added.  You can also use a lower fat recipe to keep the calorie count in check.  These are two of my favorite apple pie recipes that are great for dieters.
  • Healthy Apple Pie (182 calories per serving)
  • Apple Phyllo Pie (173 calories per serving)
The best apple pie for any dieter is the one that satisfies your sweet tooth and keeps your diet on track.  Choose your favorite recipe and enjoy it in moderation.
